MOSCOW, September 16 (Sputnik) – US firm United Launch Alliance (ULA) plans to finish operation of the Atlas-5 launch automobile with the Russian RD-180 engine within the mid-2020s, Julie Arnold, an ULA spokeswoman, instructed Sputnik.
The RD-180 engine is manufactured on the Energomash rocket engine producer (an enterprise of Russian state house company Roscosmos) and is used within the first stage of the Atlas-5 rocket. ULA supplies launch companies with Atlas-5.
In response to Energomash, 116 RD-180 engines have been despatched to the US, of which 91 have already been used. In 2020, supply of six extra RD-180s is anticipated.
America is creating a Vulcan launch automobile to exchange the Atlas-5, the primary stage of which shall be geared up with the BE-Four engines by Blue Origin.
There are plans to make use of the RD-180 in Russia – within the medium-lift Soyuz-6 rockets and the super-heavy Yenisei.
